Toolbars are available in EndNote to give you quick access to some commonly used commands. Selecting a command from the toolbar gives the same result as selecting that command from a menu.

By default, the commands on the Library toolbar include (from left to right):
Sync Library: Click the Sync icon in the toolbar to synchronize the references (including file and figure attachments) in your EndNote desktop library with the references in your EndNote online library.
Find Full Text: This command searches online for the full-text article for the selected references.
Find Reference Updates: This command opens the Review Available Updates dialog where you can look for the latest updates to a selected reference. EndNote searches for and retrieves available field updates for the selected reference. See Review Available Updates Dialog for more information.
New Reference: This opens a new reference for data entry. It is as though you had used the References menu to select New Reference.
Local Library Mode: Displays automatic groups, custom groups, and smart groups, but not Online Groups. This mode keeps you from inadvertently downloading references found during an online search into your currently open library. This is the default mode.
Online Search Mode: Search and download references from online databases. In this mode, only Online Search groups are available. References are downloaded into a temporary library. They are removed when you close EndNote.
Integrated Library & Online Search Mode: All groups and commands are available. When you download references from an online database. EndNote saves them to a group under the Online Search group set and to your open library.
Copy to Local Library: In Online Search Mode, copy the selected records to your local library.
Insert Citation: This Cite While You Write command is available only when you have a Microsoft Word document open for editing. Use it to insert the highlighted EndNote references into your Word document as linked citations.
Format Bibliography: This Cite While You Write command is available only when you have a Microsoft Word document open for editing. Use it to format the highlighted EndNote reference.
Return to Word Processing: This Cite While You Write command is available only when you have a Microsoft Word document open for editing. Use it to go to Word while working in EndNote.
Layout Menu: The view of the Library window depends on the layout that you select from the Layout menu located in the upper right-hand corner of the Library window. There are nine layout positions.

The Reference toolbar appears at the top of each open reference whether you are creating a new reference or editing an existing reference.
By default, the commands on the Reference toolbar include (from left to right):
Go to Previous Reference / Go to Next Reference arrows: The arrows navigate to the previous or next reference shown in the Library window in the current sort order.
Reference Type menu: Use this menu to select a reference type for the current reference.
Show Empty Fields: This toggle button either displays or hides empty fields in the reference.
Show Rating Field: This toggle button either displays or hides the Rating field located at the top of the Reference window in the left-hand corner.
Show Spell Check and Grammar: This brings up the Spell Check and Grammar dialog. It is as though you had used the Tools menu to select Spell Check. You can change or ignore the spelling of a term.
Mark as Read / Mark as Unread: Use these buttons to mark the current reference as Read or Unread. From the Library window, you can sort your records as Read or as Unread.
Find Reference Updates: Click this button to look for the latest updates to the current reference. EndNote searches for and retrieves available field updates for the selected reference. If a reliable match is found, EndNote displays a Review Available Updates dialog that shows you all the updates that were found. See Review Available Updates Dialog for more information.
Attach File: This displays a file dialog where you can select a file to attach to the current reference. It is as though you had used the References menu to select Figure > Attach File.
Attach Figure: This displays a file dialog where you can select a file to attach to the current reference. It is as though you had used the References menu to select Figure > Attach Figure. You can cite the attached figure in Microsoft Word.
CWYW Toolbar: Displays a Cite While You Write toolbar. You must have your word processor open in order to display the toolbar.
